Case: Patents/Obviousness (Fed. Cir.)

The Federal Circuit affirmed decisions of the Patent Trial and Appeal Board that challenged claims of Universal Electronics Inc.'s patents that relate to relaying key code signals through a remote control device to operate an electronic consumer device are unpatentable as obvious over prior art, in inter partes reviews by Roku Inc. The court said that the board correctly construed the claim terms, and found that substantial evidence supports the board’s findings concerning the combination of references and obviousness findings.
